What I was looking for was a comprehensive collection of these from the source material to save me the data entry, doing so in this instance would mean buying, maybe not for all of Paizo's expansions but certainly a good number of them.ĭespite this I wanted to raise your comment as a good point for people that might be in my position but prior to developing their own tools in which case a little bit of manual entry and a few book purchases might be exactly what they need.Īdditionally the combat tracking benefits offered by HL are something I already have a custom implementation of in Excel which has served me fine for the systems I'm interested in, and I do enough tweaking of encounter design prior to usage that although setup might be quicker from HL as I can import a pre-made encounter and then tinker as needed: it doesn't seem worth it for me. I already have systems I've built that include a fair amount of data and can add classes or spells or features to without much difficulty. Whilst you're absolutely correct about this, it defeats the reason I would want it (not the general case). Regarding the above and a comment by /u/quemius about adding my own content into HL to keep costs low and only buying what I need. I have already spent a fair amount on Paizo products especially and the thought of re-buying content in a different package though understandable in context is not something I think I'm prepared to do right now. It costs a lot of money if you want to buy all the packages to increase its capability. Thank you all again for your advice and experiences with Hero Lab, there are a lot of well reasoned arguments for both opinions below but, on balance I think I'll rely on my own tools instead of buying HL for which I reason below. (Honest positive and negative feedback is welcome and appreciated) Is the money spent on Hero Lab worth the decreased hassle that it promises to provide? NPC generation, spell tracking and combat.Īs someone who has spent a good deal of time making their own tools in excel, and using online resources to check rules and details. I've long seen people mention Hero Lab as a solution to numbers of queries regarding character design, creation and storage. This is a bit of a joint question regarding Hero Lab in Pathfinder, D&D 5th, and 3.5 (I'll be posting in /r/dnd too). /r/3d6 - For character creation, advice and sharing (system agnostic)./r/Battlemaps - For your VTT battlemap requirements.
